We did the "Over and Under the Rhine" Tour with Bill. Bill is awesome and so knowledgeable. He grew up in the town and the brewery industry. We plan to look Bill up again when we come back in Oct. for Blink festival.

I bought tickets for a tour back in January but was late and missed it; however, Aaron (director) gave me credit for another tour which I highly appreciated. We - my father and I - went on the Cellars, Saloons & Streetcars Tour and had a fantastic time. Our guide, Aaron, was extremely knowledgeable and personable. If you're in Cincinnati looking for an interesting activity to do, then I highly recommend purchasing tickets to a tour!

We tend to do a lot of tours when we travel and have done numerous beer and booze related tours over the years. The best compliment I can think of is that on this tour I learned several really interesting things. After thinking these tours were all the same this one threw me for a loop. The guide was really knowledgeable and seemed to enjoy the subject matter a lot.

I retired from 30 years in the National Park Service. I consider the NPS to be the standard for interpretation. Our guide, Aaron, is among the top three guides I’ve experienced. His knowledge of Cincinnati’s brewing history was expected, but Aaron’s enthusiasm and ability to describe these long-shuttered breweries in historic and modern context was outstanding. We will certainly return to experience other tours.

Happy Brewsday, as we round third and head for our next Ballparks & Breweries Bus Tour on Saturday, June 3! Pictured here is the 1882 Cincinnati Red Stockings team, who finished in first place during the inaugural season of the American Association. This new league was formed in response to the rigidness of the National League, who had kicked out the Red Stocking at the conclusion of the 1880 season for selling beer at their ballpark during games. The American Association was formed from a series of meetings that began at Cincinnati's Gibson House (pictured) in 1881, and one thing was clear right away, alcohol sales would be permitted at games. For this reason, the new league was nicknamed "The Beer & Whiskey League."

In 1882, when the American Association began playing baseball, there weren't any postseason games between the leagues resulting in the crowning of an overall champion, like the modern World Series. However, a two game series was arranged between the American Association Cincinnati Red Stockings and the National League Chicago White Sox (later renamed the Cubs), who had both just won the Pennant in their respective leagues. The games took place at Bank Street Grounds in Cincinnati on October 6 & 7, 1882, with the teams splitting the series. This was the first time in Major League Baseball history that two pennant winners faced each other in the postseason and it happened right here in the Queen City!

If you'd like to dig a little deeper into Cincinnati brewing and baseball history, join the Brewing Heritage Trail this Saturday, June 3 at 10am or 1pm for our Ballparks & Breweries Bus Tour, where we take you to every location the Reds played baseball, included the Banks Street Grounds! Go to: https://brewingheritagetrail.org for additional info and tickets!

Happy Brewsday! Did you know that the Cincinnati Reds were previously owned by two different local brewers during the 19th century? How about that since 1869, the team has played baseball at 8 different ballparks in 5 locations throughout the city? On Saturday, June 3, join the Brewing Heritage Trail on our new Ballparks & Breweries Bus Tour, as we take guests to every location the team has played ball throughout their history, tracing the connections of brewing and baseball along the way! Not only that, everyone who goes on the tour get's a free souvenir poster of all the locations visited and a beer at the Moerlein Lager House. Win-win-win! Tours start from the Moerlein Lager House at 10am and 1pm on June 3, and more info and tickets can be found at: https://brewingheritagetrail.org

Join us for this unique experience and we'll see you soon along the Brewing Heritage Trail!

Friday, May 19 was spring cleaning day at the Brewing Heritage Trail and thanks to volunteers from the University of Cincinnati and Brewery District volunteer Craig Margolis and Executive Director Steve Hampton, we really spiffed things up! The group spent the morning filling up a dozen 50 gallon trash bags along the trail and adjoining streets, while shinning up signage and laying mulch! If you'd like to check out their hard work, the trail is located along McMicken Avenue, Vine Street, and Moore Street, on the east side of the Brewery District and about 3/4 of a mile in length. Or better yet, take a guided tour with the Brewing Heritage Trail! Our Brewers & Barons Trail Tour runs Saturday mornings at 10am, taking guests along the trail and includes a visit to the underground lagering cellar of the 19th century Schmidt Brewery, concluding with a beer at Taft's Ale House. Go to: https://brewingheritagetrail.org for additional details and tickets.

Thanks again to everyone who came out to help shine things up and hopefully we'll see you all along the Brewing Heritage Trail this summer! #brewinghistory #overtherhine #neighborhoodcleanup

Happy Brewsday! Cincinnati in the late 19th century was definitely a city built on beer. More than a dozen breweries operated in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood and the Emmert Saloon served their beer to thirsty patrons. Some of the saloon’s best customers were local brewers, and after a few beers, many shared their frustration about farmers not showing up on time to pick up spent grains from the brewing process. This gave saloon owners Fredrick Louis Emmert and his father-in-law, Savior Maier, an idea. In 1881, they began the F.L. Emmert Company and soon established contracts with local brewers to pick up spent grains, transporting and selling them to local farmers for their livestock. This was profitable, but difficult work, as the grains were wet and heavy from the brewing process. In 1907, the company incorporated and built a drying facility (green building in photo), so the grains could be more easily stored and shipped.

During Prohibition, spent grains were less available, but the company continued to collect what they could, and shipped them around the country. They also developed a process of adding wet molasses to the grain called “Molasso-Malt” which was used as a ration for dairy cows during the in 1930s & 1940s. Today, the company still operates out of their Dunlap Street facility, but they no longer use spent grains from local breweries. Instead, they now process a liquid yeast co-product from breweries that is used in livestock feed and domestic pet food. The yeast powder is very nutritious as an additive, but it is also a flavor enhancer that animals, especially dogs, really enjoy. If you see a bag of pet food that says “Contains Dried Brewer’s Yeast” on the bag, there is a good chance that it came from their facility.

If you're interested in finding out more about local brewing history, take a guided tour with the Brewing Heritage Trail! Our non-profit organization offers tours Wednesday-Sunday each week, most go to a 19th century underground lagering cellar and all include beer! Go to: https://brewingheritagetrail.org for info and tickets to all the different experiences we offer and hopefully we'll see you soon along the Brewing Heritage Trail! #brewinghistory #cincinnatihistory #cincinnatibrewing
