Happy Brewsday! We’ll, I guess not if you’re Mr. Kauffman! We’re conducting research for a new fall tour focusing on the darker side of Cincinnati brewing history and came across this image. So the story goes, Mrs. Blanche Kauffman was very displeased to find out her husband, who was the son of local beer baron John Kauffman, had decided to divorce her, due in large part to her erratic behavior and volatile temper. As you can see from the image, she finds him on a train and attempts to kill him with a revolver. He is seriously injured, but survives, and the event becomes a major local scandal. This is especially due to the high social profile of the Kauffman family and the ensuing trial that plays out in the local papers.
If you’d like to learn more about this incident, along with many other creepy and macabre events in local brewing’s past, stay tuned for our new fall tour with details to be announced in the coming weeks. In the meantime, you can go to www.brewingheritagetrail.org to find out about all the other great experiences we offer!
